August finally blew her fiery breath into Southern California--so what do you do? Escape to the beach, of course, which is just what I did yesterday with quilt artist friends Terry Waldron, Cindy Cooksley, and Vickie Valdez-Green. The Laguna Beach Art Festival is a great place to inspire your creativity and the urge to try new things--besides, it's many degrees cooler than in North Orange County, where I live! The beach breezes remind me to tell you that I am working on a great new retreat for June 2013 AT THE BEACH! No details yet until I get it all nailed down, but I can hint--Landscape and thread work for ALL SKILL LEVELS! Stretch yourself and try new things! Come take a class, or do your own thing--your choice. Watch for more details soon!

Ready to be inspired? This weekend offers a not-to-be missed opportunity to be in the presence of some of the most incredible quilts in the world! The International Quilt Festival --largest annual quilt show in the world-- has already begun and continues through Sunday at the the Long Beach Convention Center. If you have never been to IQF, grab some friends and be prepared to be amazed by the quilts, classes, and a huge vendor mall! I will be at the Quilts On The Wall special exhibit of art quilts-- "Black and White with a Twist" on Saturday (7/28) between 3 pm and 5 pm so please come by and meet me there.
If you have a little time before the show you can also view the free exhibit of small format tapestries--Pacific Portals--at the Long Beach Public Library, which is just 3 blocks from the Convention Center, at 101 Pacific Avenue. Weaver Nicki Blair told me about this show which will run until August 30th and features 150 tapestry artists from 12 countries. You can catch the show today and tomorrow from 10 to 5, but it is closed on Sunday. I enjoyed meeting some of you yesterday at the Orange County Fair, where I represented my own North Cities Quilt Guild at our booth in the Home Arts Building number 16. We were almost adjacent to the booth for the Beach Cities Quilt Guild. They, like us, enjoyed introducing our love of quilting and our various philanthropy projects--quilts for Veterans and Christmas stockings for needy children for the Crittendon Home. We have agreed to double our donation from last year to a goal of 1000 stockings! If you are not a member of a guild, I urge you to find a local quilt guild and visit a meeting--you will find a wonderful world of fun and friendship just waiting for you! And also, the satisfaction of sharing yourself through philanthropy (yes, beginners too!) is truly good for your spirit! Well it felt like a birthing process!! Finally launching my web-site was definitely akin to delivering my son, and co-incidentally occurred on his birthday--well, technically it was 3:30 am the next morning but fudging that little detail makes the event more memorable! Funny how "just doing" the things you don't think you can do gives you such a rush. I feel so empowered! I can't wait to speak "site optimization" and "html script" to my 14 year-old grandson, who will either think I am oh so cool, or very weird--either way, I'm good with it. Speaking of feeling empowered--you must treat yourself to the "Life Lines" exhibit by the California Fiber Artists group which opened yesterday at the Front Porch Gallery in beautiful Carlsbad. See their website www.cafiberartists.com for the details, and the pictures below for an overview of this wonderful show! 22 artists are represented with quilting, sculpture, weaving, and basketry. The show is amazing and, best of all, open until September 9th, and its free--treat yourself! Well, this is me, Ricki--a real "blog virgin" and this is my first post--ever! And this is my first web site, which I made on my own--to my surprise-- with the help of the Weebly.com web site builder. I've had a lot of pushing and shoving and encouragement from my friend Terry Waldron, whose web site is amazing. Okay, so I finally purchased my domain name, fiberqwestretreats.com --that is Fiber Qwest Retreats, and yes, the funky spelling is on purpose to emphasize the west coast thing. My plan is to expand the Fiber Arts Retreats that I have been teaching since 2007, and add more venues and more teachers (like Terry!). Check out the Fall offerings, and stay tuned as I add more events and details. So my friends Karen, Vickie, Jan, and Terry all say I need a blog to tell you the scoop. More will come soon, but right now I am about the hit "publish" button and go live with the web site for the very first time. After that it will be all about some sleep so I join Terry in the morning to enjoy the opening tomorrow of the California Fiber Artists show in Carlsbad. You can get more details about the show at www.terrywaldron.com. Please let me know what you think of my web site, and please share it with your friends. Quilting and the textile arts are my passions, and I hope to share that love with those who never thought they could sew or quilt--a whole new world awaits! |
AuthorRicki Bremer's love affair with teaching starting while teaching high school and junior high. Next came 29 years as a craft and quilt shop owner, and the publication of her first book, Simple and Sensational Purses from Placemats, now in its third printing. The second book, Dual Pursenalities followed. Later additions were the Private Eyes Nursing Apron, and her latest--a microwave hot bag pattern, The AAAhhsum Bag--which has been used exclusively at the massage booth at the Road to California Show. Ricki has continued to use her easy methods to bring the joy of sewing and quilting to beginners and others. She also loves to simplify things for those ready for more challenging techniques. The Fiber Arts Retreats, which she started in 2007 formerly through the Tall Mouse, are growing and expanding to new venues, and a new name--Fiber Qwest Retreats. Ricki aims to broaden the interest and opportunities to learn and play in all areas of fiber and the creative arts. Archives
