A FEAST FOR THE EYES, AND SPIRIT!

Ready to be inspired?  This weekend offers a not-to-be missed opportunity to be in the presence of some of the most incredible quilts in the world!  The International Quilt Festival --largest annual quilt show in the world-- has already begun and continues through Sunday at the the Long Beach Convention Center.  If you have never been to IQF, grab some friends and be prepared to be amazed by the quilts, classes, and a huge vendor mall!  I will be at the Quilts On The Wall special exhibit of art quilts-- "Black and White with a Twist" on Saturday (7/28) between 3 pm and 5 pm so please come by and meet me there.

If you have a little time before the show you can also view the free exhibit of small format tapestries--Pacific Portals--at the Long Beach Public Library, which is just 3 blocks from the Convention Center, at 101 Pacific Avenue.  Weaver Nicki Blair told me about this show which will run until August 30th and features 150 tapestry artists from 12 countries.  You can catch the show today and tomorrow from 10 to 5, but it is closed on Sunday.

I enjoyed meeting some of you yesterday at the Orange County Fair, where I represented my own North Cities Quilt Guild at our booth in the Home Arts Building number 16.  We were almost adjacent to the booth for the Beach Cities Quilt Guild. They, like us, enjoyed introducing our love of quilting and our various philanthropy projects--quilts for Veterans and Christmas stockings for needy children for the Crittendon Home.  We have agreed to double our donation from last year to a goal of 1000 stockings!  If you are not a member of a guild, I urge you to find a local quilt guild and visit a meeting--you will find a wonderful world of fun and friendship just waiting for you!  And also, the satisfaction of sharing yourself through philanthropy (yes, beginners too!) is truly good for your spirit!

Ricki Bremer's love affair with teaching starting while teaching high school and junior high.  Next came 29 years as a craft and quilt shop owner, and the publication of her first book, Simple and Sensational Purses from Placemats, now in its third printing. The second book, Dual Pursenalities followed.  Later additions were the Private Eyes Nursing Apron, and her latest--a microwave hot bag pattern, The AAAhhsum Bag--which has been used exclusively at the massage booth at the Road to California Show. Ricki has continued to use her easy methods to bring the joy of sewing and quilting to beginners and others.  She also loves to simplify things for those ready for more challenging techniques. The Fiber Arts Retreats, which she started in 2007 formerly through the Tall Mouse, are growing and expanding to new venues, and a new name--Fiber Qwest Retreats.  Ricki aims to broaden the interest and opportunities to learn and play in all areas of fiber and the creative arts.
